Freewheeling in Stanford

Stanford Valley is owned by over forty friends with one goal in mind, the goal to create, in a sustainable and environmentally friendly way, a remarkable place that inspires them and hopefully others. And it was out of this desire that freewheeling was born. Freewheeling is an exciting and dynamic future thinking and sustainability festival, which is annually held at Stanford Valley in late summer. Some of South Africas leading thinkers, economists, scientists, artists and environmentalists convene at the festival, over a three day period, to share and discuss their latest ideas with hundreds of festival guests.

It is described as a weekend packed full of activities that offer those in attendance the opportunity to explore intellectually, emotional and spiritually in new and profound ways. The focus of the festival is the challenges facing practical, sustainable living in the context of friendship and community. Right from the start you need to know that at Freewheeling there is only one rule: no brakes. All attendees are encouraged to let-loose and let go!

The 2011 Freewheeling was held from Saturday 19 March to Tuesday 22 March 2011 and included live demonstrations, interactive dialogues, art, music, theatre and heaps of childrens activities. There were also optional pre-breakfast activities, followed by workshops which ran in parallel throughout the day, with sundown and evening live entertainment later. You got to design your own day based on your own rhythm, specific interests and workshop selections. You filled your day full, or broke it up with swimming and walking, or stimulating conversations over a glass of something. The parallel daily Childrens Programme (5 to 13 years) included farm activities and nature walks, arts & crafts, African dance, growing veggies, storytelling, jungle gym, trampoline, swimming, and music.
