Ceres Chrysanthemum Show

Ceres Chrysanthemum Show

First cultivated in China as a flowering herb as far back as the 15th century BC, the Chrysanthemum (chrysous, meaning golden and anthemon, meaning flower) was named in Greek by Linnaeus in Europe in the 17th Century. Over the years the Mums or Chrysanths, as they have become as, have evolved and have two different adaptations, the Hardy Garden and the Exhibition Chrysanthemum. A group of enthusiasts called the Chrysanthemum Association of South Africa has been formed across the country in order to promote this beautiful species of flowering plant. Once a year the National Chrysanthemum Association of South Africa (Western Cape) holds its annual event, which showcases the work of dedicated local chrysanthemum growers. The chrysanthemums on display can be bought on this day, along with the prize winning chrysanthemums. The Ceres Chrysanthemum Association started growing and showcasing chrysanthemums nationally from 2004 and consists of over 21 members, the youngest of which was 14yrs old. More than just a show displaying Chrysanthemums, the Ceres Chrysanthemum Show also showcases local products on offer including baking, confectionary, needlework and handcraft as well as offering flower arranging demonstrations.

The Ceres Chrysanthemum Show 2011 was held on Saturday 7 May at the NG Church hall , Church Street, in Wellington. The doors opened to the public at 13:00 and the entry fee was R10 per person.
