Cadiz Freedom Swim

Cadiz Freedom Swim
The Cadiz Freedom Swim is held in Cape Town. It is an annual event and attracts many local and international competitors. The race is one of the toughest long distance swims in the world and the waters are known to be bitterly cold and currents unpredictable. The race starts from Murray's Bay on World Heritage site, Robben Island and ends on Big Bay Beach, Bloubergstrand. The date set for the swim is the 7th May 2011. (weather permitting) The Cadiz Freedom Swim is well organised and raises funds for the Vista Nova School for children with special needs in Cape Town. The Cadiz Financial Services Group is the official race sponsor.

Each year the swim gets bigger and better with over 400 swimmers expected to participate this year, 2011. Dates for 2012 are to be confirmed.
The event not only supports children with special needs but brings awareness to Robben Island's historic role in South Africa's struggle for democracy.
The swim consists of two categories, the Solo and the Relay. The Solo swim requires that swimmers be over the age of 15 and to join the relay team, you must be between 12 years old and 18 years old. The swim is considered extreme and all participants must adhere to the rules and regulations. All relay teams must be supported by a motorised boat which must be organised by the teams and well in advance of the swim day. Prizes are awarded to the different categories and all swimmers receive a Cadiz Freedom Swim medal.
