Brass Band Pops

Brass Band Pops

The annual Brass Band Pops is about more than just local bands and schools strutting their musical talents by playing classical and jazz music, its about former minstrel Kader Millers , dream to promote and advocate youth participation in learning to read classical music and play musical instruments. Miller said he often saw youth bands performing in the street or at the local community halls and kept thinking that someone needed to help them go further, and rather than wait for someone else to do it, he made the move himself. Miller approached various bands and minstrels with the opportunity to play at a major venue, the Cape Town City Hall, but with certain conditions. The youngsters had to learn to read and play classical music and instruments as well as performing in formal jackets and bow ties. The interest was phenomenal and today the musicians in the bands range from 10 to 24 years old, from areas including Delft, Mitchells Plain, Hanover Park, Manenberg, Bonteheuwel and Bo-Kaap, and the Brass Band Pops at the Cape Town City Hall has taken Cape Town by storm.

The 2011 performance saw the Cape Town Concert Brass open the event with pieces such as The Lord of the Rings, Dont Cry for Me Argentina, The A-Team, The Magnificent Seven, and Star Wars. There were also performances by the Philharmonic Youth Wind Ensemble, the Delft Big Band, the GC Brass Band, the Golden Dixies, the Impronto School of Music, the Omega Brass Ensemble, the Phantom Legionnaires, the SACS Wind Band and the United Brass Band.

Miller stated that if even one of the youngsters received recognition, either in the form of a bursary or job offer, then his goal will have been achieved, he wants to give them the opportunities that he never had, but would have liked, as a young musician.
