North West Cultural Calabash
The North West Cultural Calabash is held annually in the town called Lokaleng in the North West Province in South Africa. The event is a youth based festival of arts which was once a one day event. The festival has grown into a popular event full of fun and entertainment. Each year auditions are held and only the best of the best are selected to perform at the main festival in drama, dance and music. This unique Cultural Calabash was started by Hendrik Baird in 1994. The Calabash symbolises the traditional use of feeding people in Africa. The calabash is hollowed out and used as a bowl to serve food in. The Cultural Calabash is popular amongst locals and visitors.
