AfrikaBurn

Imagine a "fantastically amazing mind-blowing party in the middle of the Karoo!" Well its more than just that, its an art festival with a difference. Its AfrikaBurn! Its an arts and freedom of expression festival which creates a temporary community in a fabulously remote, beautiful and other-worldly part of South Africa. The community is based on radical self-expression and self-reliance in a non-commercial environment which means there is nothing for sale - no vendors, no advertising, not even a barter economy. The organisers objective is to create a blank canvas where participants can display any creative endeavour that they want to and all of this in an environment that is not governed by any commercial enterprises. The whole festival is an exercise in total self-reliance: participants camp for four days and provide entirely for themselves, including all their water, shelter and food needs. The entire festival is created by voluntary participants who invest their own personal skills, resources, time and money in the shared project of self expression and creating, for a few days: a Utopian vision.
Where is AfrikaBurn?
Driving to AfrikaBurn is like a three and a half hour drive to the moon where you will find this perfect blank canvas for AfrikaBurn to become what its going to become. The venue is on the longest stretch of road in South Africa without a town on it and AfrikaBurn is half way up it. So this means that preparation is very important. After leaving the N1 the remainder of the route is about 45 kilometres on tar and 110 kilometres on un-tarred road. The un-tarred road is in good condition and any regular car can drive on it. The second half of the journey is without cell phone reception. Please ensure that you have a decent spare tyre, jack and wheel spanner.

AfrikaBurn is held in a hot desert environment, so please make sure that you take sufficient water, a shade structure for your campsite is also advisable. Also remember that AfrikaBurn is a leave-no-trace event and that all your rubbish must be removed before you leave the event. Don't forget that AfrikaBurn is a participant created event and that you need to bring whatever you and your group have been planning to gift to the AfrikaBurn community. And remember, AfrikaBurn has no spectators!

NB: Please be reminded that there will be no commercial vending/activity at AfrikaBurn whatsoever - there will be NO food, drinks or booze for sale at the event. You must bring all your own food, WATER (for drinking, cleaning and washing) and camping equipment for the full duration of your stay at the event.

Directions
Head out on the N1 highway North towards Worcester
Go through the Hugenot Tunnel, Worcester, De Doorns
Approximately 160kms along the N1, 10kms BEFORE Touws River, turn LEFT onto the R46, towards Ceres.
Fill your petrol/diesel tank up in Worcester or Touws River as there is no fuel available thereafter.
This road continues for approximately 40kms and ends in a T-junction.
At the T-junction turn RIGHT onto the R355 Towards Calvinia and Sutherland.
Approximately 100m on, the road turns to dust.
THIS SECTION OF ROAD IS NARROW, HAS BENDS, HAS A STEEP DROP AND NO BARRIERS. PLEASE GO VERY SLOWLY HERE. DO NOT GO FASTER THAN 60KM/H. THIS PATCH DOES NOT CONTINUE FOR LONG, SO HAVE PATIENCE - PLEASE.
It is also about here that you will lose cell phone reception, except for a few very low reception patches here and there. So don't be relying on cell phone reception for anything.
There will be another small section of tar road (as the road passes through a settlement) and will turn to dust again.
Stay on the R355 towards Calvinia (Do not turn right to Sutherland).
The entrance to the venue for AfrikaBurn is approximately 113 kms along this road, just after a small settlement called Tweefontein.
Your land marks for getting closer are: a small white bridge crossing the Tankwa "river" (this means you are about 2kms away from the turn off into the venue) followed by a satellite telephone tower on your left hand side.
You will then turn RIGHT into the property known as "STONEHENGE"
As you go through the gate there will be a couple of small cottages on your RIGHT - a settlement called "Lekkerlag"
This is a small two track farm road, it is suitable for small cars, but you need to go slowly.
The Ticketing (Will Call) Centre will be 5kms along this road. This is where you can collect your tickets, then move on to be greeted and arrive at AfrikaBurn!
