Dellrust Wine Estate

Dellrust Wine Estate

The Western Cape in South Africa is well known around the world as a top wine producing area, especially the Stellenbosch Helderberg area. With mountains, valleys, cool coastal breezes and rich soil it is no wonder that the years have produced some world famous wine estates. One of these estates is Dellrust Wine Estate. Lower-Rustenburg has been the home to Dellrust wines since the Bredell family started farming there in 1863. Although Johan Bredell was the first family member to farm in the Helderberg region, he did not grow grapes but rather farmed with wheat and cattle. It was only in the early 1900s that vineyards were planted and in 1916 the first wine cellar was built, producing white semi sweet wine and port for bulk trade to companies like KWV and Castle Wine & Brandy Company. The years have seen many changes on the farm including those in 1985 when the Bredells put their first bottled wines on the shelf. In 1998 the brothers split the business and Albert started his own brand, Dellrust. Today the 98 hectare estate is planted with red varietals Shiraz, Pinotage, Merlot and Ruby Cabernet as well as white plantings including Sauvignon Blanc. Only a carefully selected part of the total harvest is sold under the Dellrust label. 2010 has seen the farm have a major drive toward tourism in South Africa with the planning of a restaurant and function facilities, focussing mainly on boutique wines.
