Rolfontein Nature Reserve

Rolfontein Nature Reserve

On the southern shore of Vanderkloof Dam lies a 8 000 hectare nature reserve first established in 1970. The reserve has a varied landscape which includes mountains and stretches of Karoo plains dotted with dolerite koppies (hills). The Reserve also features a variety of game species which include the White Rhino, Black wildebeest, Gemsbok, Red hartebeest, Burchells zebra, Springbok, Brown hyena, Mountain reedbuck, Steenbok, Grey duiker, Bat-Eared fox, Baboon, Vervet monkey, Aardvark and Aardwolf, as well as the over 200 species of birds which have been identified. The grazing animals on the reserve are fed by over forty different species of grass while the browsers such as the Eland and Kudu prefer the leaves and seeds of trees and shrubs. The Mountain kloofs are densely wooded with wild olives, sweet thorn and karee, while cabbage trees, black thorn and camphor bush occur on the rocky ridges providing for the many species of birds in the reserve, including the Fish Eagle.

Picnicking is allowed at designated sites throughout the reserve and visitors must provide their own firewood. The Pied Barbet hiking trail is also recommended and is a two hour walk (4 kilometres) from start to finish.

The Reserve is open every day from 08:00 to 16:00 and entrance permits must be obtained from the security gate. There is also a list of important rules which need to be adhered to and this is also available at the gate. Most of roads in the reserve are in a reasonable condition, although there are a couple which do require the use of a 4x4 vehicle.

All bookings must be made well in advance at the reserve office.
