Blouberg Nature Reserve

Just west of Makhado, at the foot of the Blouberg Krans, lies a unique nature reserve, Blouberg Nature Reserve. Originally proclaimed in 1983 to conserve the ecosystems of the eastern Blouberg Mountain, the reserve covers an area of 9360 hectares on the eastern portion of the range and is home to the worlds largest breeding colony of Cape vultures. Along with the Cape vultures, you will also find the Lappet-faced Vulture, Hooded Vulture, White-headed Vulture and White-backed Vulture as well as the rare Ruppells Vulture, which is breeding in the Blouberg area. With well over 225 recorded species in the reserve it is well worth the visit for that alone but this bushveld savannah spotted with baobab trees is also home to giraffe, zebra, Cape buffalo, sable antelope and leopard. And it is not only the dry areas, there are also wetlands and small Sycamore fig forest with some wonderful hiking trails.

Usually a stop over for people travelling to Botswana, Zimbabwe, Mapungubwe National Park or Northern Kruger Park, the reserve should definitely be given more time in order to appreciate it fully. The reserve is open daily from 06:00 to 19:00 and entrance fees are charged at the gate.
