Franschhoek Literary Festival

Franschhoek Literary Festival

Book lovers from across the country and even the world flock to Franschhoek once a year to take part in this The Celebration of Books and Writers. The festival usually takes place during the third week of May since its inception in 2007. The venues are spread throughout the village but all within walking distance of each other and the streets are usually buzzing with book talk. Bookshops, cafes, restaraunts, hotels, guest houses and unique little stores all add to the experience of the festival. The village springs to life as publishers arrive to hold book launches, poets bring their works to an open mic session. Southern African as well as International writers, ranging from the renowned to little-known, gather in Franschoek to discuss their works and give workshops on topics from biography, history and politics to poetry, literary fiction and love stories. 2011 will see the introduction of events for the new-generation readers including graphic novels, speculative and cellphone fiction, satirical blogs and work in progress.
Apart from all the literary work on display over the festival, Franschhoek still has its mountain walks, wine farms, wineries and wine-tastings. The festival came into existence after a committee of six volunteers was created in order to raise funds for a much needed library in the community. Not expecting more than 500 visitors the 2007 festival took them by surprise with well over one thousand seats being sold. Today the festival has increased to over four times the original size and become one of the leading literary events on the South African calendar.

So if you are an author, poet, editor, illustrator, or even just someone passionate about the written word, the Franschhoek Literary Festival is the place to be.

The festival organisers aims are: to appreciate and encourage writers and writing at informal events in a village setting, to foster a vibrant culture of reading, and to raise funds for community and school libraries funds in their valley so that appropriate books are available in local languages to all.
