Safari Ostrich Show Farm

Safari Ostrich Show Farm

The commercial ostrich industry was birthed in the late 1880s, with the fashion demand in Europe for ostrich feathers. This inspired the growth of the industry, and the Oudtshoorn district quickly became known as the Ostrich capital of the world.
Safari Ostrich Show Farm, was established more than 40 years ago by two ostrich farmers - Derek Fisch and the late Harry Lipschitz and is today an operating farm where visitors will see large flocks of ostriches at different stages of development. Tours leave every hour and visitors are assisted by multi-lingual guides who will, explain every part of ostrich farming, from breeding to rearing. Visitors will start at the breeding camp with a nest of eggs, and even get an opportunity to stand on them to show how strong they are. During breeding season there is the possibility of watching the eggs hatch in the incubator rooms. For the brave at heart there is an opportunity to ride an ostrich otherwise just sit on one for a snapshot. Every tour ends with an Ostrich Race where local jockeys display their riding skills. This is both a highly entertaining and educational tour for young and old.

Safari Ostrich Show Farm is open from 8:00 to 17:00 daily, from Monday to Sunday and Public Holidays. The tours leave every hour and there are special rates for children and large tour groups with pre-booked groups being able to enjoy a variety of set menu lunches in the air-conditioned dining room.
