Bushmen Paintings in the Gifberg Area
The Gifberg Bushmen Paintings are situated in the Western Cape Province of South Africa near Vanrhynsdorp. Gifberg means "poison mountain" and is known to have been named this for the poison found here that the tribes used on their arrows for hunting. The Rock Art is very popular amongst locals and visitors from all over the world. They are truly remarkable and the tribes recorded their every day life on these rocks. It is a very interesting and informing trip. You will learn a lot about this tribe and their way of life, how they lived and hunted for food. The San Bushmen have lived for thousands of years and have left a legacy of Rock Art worth taking a look at. Part of the West Coast Rock Art Route, which explores Bushman art on the West Coast, the Gifberg Bushmen Paintings site is reached by a narrow pass branching off the N7 highway from Cape Town about 15km south of Van Rhynsdorp.
