Maltese Cross Hike

The Maltese Cross is a 7km scenic hike in the Cederberg which takes approximately 3.5 to 4 hours if you just make it a leisurely hike and stop for a break at the awe inspiring rock formation. The hike is classified as a moderate half day walk from Dwarsrivier and is only possible once a permit has been acquired from the Dwarsrivier Farm and then follow their map to the start of the walk. The first half of the hike is an uphill climb along a very clear path to the Maltese Cross with magnificent views of the Cederberg mountain range and then its back down the hill along the same path. The rock formation is in reality a monolith which has been left behind after millions of years of erosion around it and stands almost as high as a 5 storey building.

Directions
From Cape Town, take the N7 turn-off on the N1 and, 28 km after Citrusdal, turn right at the Algeria/Cederberg sign. Continue past Algeria and over the Uitkyk Pass - about 46 km of gravel road - until you reach Dwarsrivier, also the home of the world famous Cederberg Wines. The total distance from Cape Town is approximately 250 km or 3 hours drive.
