Excelsior Estate

If you havent heard the De Wet family name in South African wine making circles then this must be your first glance at this wine producing nation. The first De Wet family member arrived in the Cape over 300 years ago, an entrepreneur and wine connoisseur. Before the introduction of the motor vehicle, the De Wets ostrich farm Excelsior was the most well known in the Robertson district. The de Wets built an enormous farmhouse on Excelsior with strong undertones of the Victorian era, decorated with impressive chimneys and Cape Dutch gables, a style which became known as "Cape Revival". This original home has been extensively restored to its former glory.
The introduction of the motor vehicle may have seen a major decline in the popularity of ornate ostrich feathers in fashion but it never had a negative effect on the Wine industry in the Cape. The Excelsior Estate today is still a top wine producer in South Africa.
Wine tasting for visitors may be done in the in the wooden beamed tasting room which has doors which open onto a deck overlooking the magnificent vineyards.
The Excelsior Estate also offer a special service which allows you to blend your own wine, bottle, label and cork it as a reminder of your time at the estate. Special guided tours of the cellars can also be arranged for groups of up to 10, but must be booked in advance.
