Riemvasmaak Hot Springs

Riemvasmaak Hot Springs

Just North of The Augrabies Falls in a remote area of the Northern Cape lies a rural community called Riemvasmaak. Lying between the Orange River and the dry Molopo River, with a 75000 hectare landscape made up of 80m cliffs, mount desert plains and awe-inspiring rock formations, this community has not been changed much by world around it. The landscape was carved out of the earth by volcanic eruptions millions of years ago but deep underground there is still activity which heats up the waters of the Riemvasmaak Hot Spring. Local legend has it that the spring holds medicinal value and that an ancient inhabitant, suffering from arthritis, tied leather thongs together to scale down the cliffs to reach it. The word Riemvasmaak came from the Khoe word "Konkaib" and means to tie thongs together. Two swimming pools have been built at the site of the spring for visitors to relax in, one of which has been modeled on a conversation pit.
Take some time out of your schedule to leave the world you know and bathe in the waters of another world.
