Durban's Fresh Paint Gallery is located in Helen Joseph Rd (previously known
as Davenport Rd), in the residential area of Glenwood and is hard to miss. The
gallery is housed in a Victorian style home which has been painted in a rather
vivid shade of green, and features a pair of huge menacing blue Dalmatians with
bloodshot eyes perched on the roof.
The gallery specializes in unusual and quirky pieces of contemporary African art, and antique artifacts from Angola, Congo, and Tanzania. The Fresh Paint Gallery is committed to showcasing and making these works accessible to a wider spectrum of art enthusiasts. The collection at the Fresh paint gallery includes various ceremonial masks, headrests, fetishes, statues, chairs and a variety of other items. The gallery also houses the African Toy Shop, which carries a wide and interesting selection of hand made toys for children of all ages.
These distinctive toys are made from a variety of natural and recycled materials, and are culturally relevant to the communities which make them. The African Toyshop operates on principles of fair trade, and sources toys from craftspeople throughout Africa including Malawi, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Congo and South Africa. The Fresh Paint Gallery is open daily from 9am - 4pm on weekdays, and opens between 9am and 1pm on Saturdays, or after hours by appointment. For more information call (031) 201 8367
