St. Thomas' Anglican church is located in Musgrave up on Durban's Berea. The
church is over a century old, and is housed in a grand old stone building. The
original Church was located high on the Berea's Ridge Road and was consecrated
in 1864 by Bishop Robert Grey. The church realized in 1890, that they needed to
move to a central location, and construction of the new building in Musgrave
road started in 1899, continuing until 1910.
The St. Thomas church is a late Victorian era church, constructed in a distinct gothic revival style. The land on which the church was built was donated by G.C Cato in 1860. The old brick building situated on Durban's trendy Musgrave road, with its imposing spire features magnificent, high vaulted ceilings, beautifully stained windows, and a Baptismal font. The church organ was built in 1905 by the well known British pipe organ manufacturers of the time Henry Willis & Sons.
The graveyard at St. Thomas' has been described as the prettiest in Durban, and displays awesome examples of stonemasonry, such as three wonderful carved angels standing on carved clouds, several open books, numerous obelisks with urns on top, several Gothic headstones and a variety of miniature columns. The narrow road which leads up the Ridge has been named after the twelve year old Julia Gardiner, who lies buried in the cemetery. The old Church is still used from time to time for weddings and funerals, and weekly services are held there on Wednesday evenings.
