Pigeon Valley Park is a Natural Heritage site covering an area of ten
hectares, and consists mainly of coastal climax forest. It is the last remaining
portion of the Stella Bush which, at one point used to cover most of the Berea
Ridge. The reserve is named after the Bronze Naped Pigeon, which used to
frequent the valley, though unfortunately this bird is now extinct in the area.
Within the Park there a numerous giant trees, which are characteristic of
coastal climax forests.
The park was proclaimed with the primary intention of protecting the Natal White Stinkwood which is possibly one of the scarcest tree species in South Africa. The Natal Loquat ,with sweetly scented blossoms flowers only at night, is another of the rare specimens to be found at Pigeon Valley . Pigeon Valley serves as an excellent birdwatching destination , and boasts a checklist of more than one hundred species. The most notable of these species to frequent the reserve is a rare winter visitor, known as the Spotted Thrush, and visitors to the reserve during the winter months are almost definitely guaranteed a sighting of this bird. Other elusive birds found in Pigeon Valley include narina trogan, green twinspot, and the buffspotted flufftail.
A variety of wildlife can also be found in the reserve, including Blue Duiker, Vervet monkeys, slender mongoose, Banded mongoose, Water mongoose, Rock hyrax and Spotted Genet. A five hundred meter trail runs on either side of the valley, allowing visitors to make their way through the reserve effortlessly.
