Monkeyland Primate Sanctuary (The Crags, near Plettenberg Bay):
The world’s first free-roaming multi-specie primate sanctuary. It offers tours (monkey safaris) during which you’ll see more than 550 primates comprising of capuchin monkeys, ringtail and black-and-white ruffed lemurs, saki monkeys, squirrel monkeys, vervet monkeys, 2 species of langur, howler monkeys, gibbons, etc in their forest home. During your tour, you will also experience the 128-metre suspended canopy walk. Monkeyland’s safari guides are multi-lingual; languages spoken include German, Dutch, French and Spanish.
Monkeyland is the only Fairtrade accredited primate sanctuary in South Africa.
Birds of Eden (next to Monkeyland):
The world’s largest free-flight bird aviary (50 metres high, covering 23 000 square meters of forest). Birds of Eden houses more than 3,500 specimens of more than 280 species, with the main focus being African birds. The dome covers 2 km of boardwalks, an amphitheatre (maximum audience: 200), a restaurant, several ponds and dams and a souvenir store. Visits to Birds of Eden are usually self-guided, however guided walks are offered on request.
In 2010 the species count at Birds of Eden was just touching 220. The bird inhabitants of the aviary comprise a mixture of exotic as well African birds (50/50). They also include previously caged pets and hand reared and imprinted individuals, this explains why some of the inhabitants (especially the parrots of which they have 60 different species) are unafraid of human beings and seemingly tame. All new arrivals at Birds of Eden go through a process of rehabilitation before they enter the actual sanctuary of the main aviary. Be they ex pets, or birds confiscated from zoos or irreputable breeders, most of the birds that arrive at Birds of Eden have a history of being caged in small environments.
Birds of Eden is the only Fairtrade accredited bird sanctuary in South Africa.
Jukani Wildlife Sanctaury (purchased by Monkeyland and Birds of Eden and relocated to Plettenberg Bay February 2013):
Jukani is home to the big cats such as lions (white and tawny), cheetahs, tigers (Siberian, Bengal and white), leopard (spotted and black), jaguar, pumas, caracal, serval cats and other wildlife species such as zebra, springbuck, zorilla, honey badger and various snake species.
