THE SPINNEY
Self Catering Cottage Accommodation
in Umkhomasi, KwaZulu Natal
If you are wanting a place to chill-out - then look no further! The Spinney
(a word that means "a small clump of trees" - perhaps you remember your "Winnie
the Pooh"?), is situated halfway along the road that runs between Nottingham
Road and Underberg. The same road that one turns off to go up Sani
Pass! The building was originally built in the 1950's as the Inzinga Cash Store,
but was converted into accommodation 4 years ago. The area is relatively remote,
comprising large tracts of mountainous ranchlands. The nearest shop or
restaurant is 45 km away at Nottingham Road. There is not even a TV or cell
phone signal!
The Spinney can sleep a maximum of 6. There is a double bedroom in the loft and
the other beds (2 single and I sleeper couch) are in the main, open-plan area of
the cottage, where there is a great fireplace The kitchen has a big dining table
and is well-equipped for self-catering with a gas stove (with oven), microwave,
fridge and double sink. There is a main bathroom with both a bath & overhead
shower, as well as an additional loo & basin.
We border on the Ukhahlamba World Heritage Site and can boast beautiful mountain
vistas and pristine streams for swimming. A number of Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife
Wilderness Areas are to be found in the vicinity, namely Umkhomasi (3 km away),
Loteni (24 km) and The Kamberg Rock Art Centre (32 km). All 3 offer great
hiking, birding and breathtaking scenery as well as possible sightings of eland,
reedbuck (3 species), jackal and duiker. Sani Pass turn-off is approx 40 km away
and is a perfect day's outing from here. However, you do need a 4x4 and a
passport to go up the Pass.
Should you want a break from cooking we do meals on request (see prices under
the "Rates & Tariffs" tab, top right hand side). Although there is 14 km of
gravel road we are accessible in any sedan car.
We regret NO PETS.
