Only 45 minutes from Port Elizabeth, is to be found the four-star graded, superior rated Colonial on Arundel, a magnificent period home, dating back to the 1930s, and set in the Sundays River Valley at Addo, in the heart of the Eastern Cape. The establishment is owner managed by Molly and Conor O'Hagan Ward, former hoteliers and game lodge partners.
The working farm, named Arundel by the original owners who settled here from Sussex, lies in a world famous citrus producing area of South Africa. Wander through the
orchards of oranges and lemons at your leisure and encounter the peace and tranquility of the abundant bird-life on the Coerney River, which borders the property, or relax at the intimate and secluded guest pool in the landscaped gardens. Swimming towels are provided.
In a malaria free area, The Colonial is just 15 minutes from the Addo Elephant Park, and close to many other private game reserves which offer the day guest the Big Five right on our doorstep. Conor is a qualified and experienced guide, who arranges private day trips in an air-conditioned Land Rover into the Addo Elephant Park. These trips incorporate the historical and cultural aspects of the area, besides the obvious encounters with the pachyderms and other animals.
The Zuurberg Mountains, also just 15kms from your doorstep, offer hiking and horse-riding trails, and exhilarating elephant back safaris, which can be booked in advance by Molly, on your behalf.
During the month of October, the valley hosts the world famous Addo Rose Day.
The Colonial offers understated luxury in two garden-facing suites, each with private entrance. Both units comprise a bedroom with extra length and extra depth queen sized double beds, fitted with dual controlled electric blankets. Crisp percale linen and down duvets enhance your comfort. The units are en suite to a deluxe shower and double vanity and high quality guest amenities are supplied.
There is an antique bath in the garden for those that prefer not to shower! Both
units have Wifi available.
Elegantly appointed, with the emphasis on your comfort and relaxation, both the suites offer separate independent lounges. There is the added pleasure of wonderful coffee table books and magazines, complimentary tea/coffee facilities and a courtesy bar fridge.
The rooms are heated for the chilly winter nights and the bedrooms have both overhead fan and air-conditioning for the warmer African days. A private safe and hairdryer complete the well thought out facilities.
Please make note of the fact that both units are smoke free.
The wide-ranging farmhouse breakfast, included in the tariff, is served on the main house spacious garden-facing verandah overlooking the extensive lawns and the citrus orchards, which border the park-like gardens.
Credit card facilities are available; a free daily car washing service is provided; and a same day laundry service is available.
Parking is provided close to the units.
We now offer 2 and 3 course home-cooked set dinners, with rates available on
request.
