The Beach Shack is a small simple fisherman's holiday cottage situated
right on the beach on a coastal farm on the South Cape Coast. It is about 4
hours away from Cape Town and lies halfway between Witsands and Stilbay. If you
know the area well then a better description is that it on the farm Koensrust
that surrounds both Puntjie and Kleinefontein at the mouth of the Duiwenhoks
River on the Blombos coast.
It is situated on the edge of a small private beachy cove down a short steep
path from the car park above.
In front of you at low tide there are 101 small rock pools ready for exploring.
At high tide they are covered and ready for fishing (Kob, Galjoen, Elf and
Musselcracker are the favourites). It has been a favourite fishing spot for
literally thousands of years. There is an easily recognisable ancient San stone
fish trap to the one side and numerous shell middens along the beach. Much
further east along the bay near the original Blombos farm there is a world
renowned archaeological site that has recently revealed a few "oldests and
firsts" in Africa.
East of the shack towards Blombos, there is 30km of empty white beach for
swimming, walking, fishing and collecting shells and strange flotsam. To the
west around the small rocky promontory is more beach but it is shorter an
rockier. And the shack itself is perfect for reading, listening to the sea or
simply doing nothing.
The farm, Koensrust, is quite large (1000ha) and is a magnificent example of
Southern Cape and Limestone fynbos. An active program of alien removal over the
past 15 years has ensured that the farm is free of rooikranz and other alien
vegetation that infests much of the area. The farm has also been re-stocked with
indigenous game including Bontebok, Cape Mountain Zebra and Grey Rhebuck. There
are numerous interesting walks and game drives to chose from. The river is on
the very far side of the farm and although it offers wonderful swimming and
fishing, while you are staying at the shack you are unlikely to go there as it
involves a 15 minute drive and a 10 minute walk down the much bigger hill.
The Beach Shack consists of three buildings and can accommodate 8 people
in the four bedrooms with two double beds and 4 single beds. The lights are
powered by a wind generator and solar panels while the water is pumped from a
spring on the beach. The kitchen is fully equipped. It has a shoulder height
electric fridge (with a tiny freezer) and a gas stove and oven. There is an
inside dining room but we expect however that you will eat outside on the large
braai deck for most meals. There is a picnic table and a huge umbrella on the
braai deck.
Bedding is provided but you will need to provide your own towels. The cottage
will be cleaned before you arrive and after you leave. If you wish we can
arrange a daily cleaning service. You will need to discuss this when you book.
The farm currently lets out The Beach Shack on the beach, The Cottage on
the yard and a campsite on the river.
