SUGAR BEACH SELF CATERING APARTMENT
Self Catering Apartment Accommodation
in Gordon's Bay, Cape Town,
Western Cape, South Africa
Named after Robert Jacob Gordon - initially second-in-command of the Cape garrison but towards the end of the 18th century he became the officer-commanding. This picturesque coastal town can be proud that it is named after such a remarkable man like Robert Jacob Gordon, a soldier in the Dutch
defense force, was of Scottish origin. He was born in Doesburg, Holland, in 1743 and grew up there. The Gordons were Dutch except in name. In 1773 Gordon came to the Cape and undertook a botanical expedition to the hinterland along with the famous Swedish botanist C P Thunberg and the Scot Francis F Masson. In 1777 he returned to the Cape and was appointed second-in-command at the Cape garrison.
The huge anchor sign and initials GB (General Botha) on the slopes of the Steenbras mountain are the insignia of
Gordon's Bay.
The National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI), Lifeboat station 9, was inaugurated at Gordon's Bay in October 1969.
The internationally renowned yachtsman, Bertie (Biltong) Reed, was a resident of Gordon's Bay.
