tourist attractions, you won't find more appropriate holiday accommodation in St
Lucia!
Where is St Lucia?
Follow the East Coast of South Africa northwards and you will find an area
of stunning beauty - St Lucia. This stretch of coastline, from the iMfolosi
River to the Mozambique border is known as the Elephant Coast. The area is
dominated by the St Lucia Estuary - also referred to as Lake St Lucia -
alongside which you will find the popular tourist town of St Lucia - an exotic
holiday spot just six hours drive from Johannesburg and two hours from Durban.
In addition to the spectacular St Lucia Estuary, there are beautiful beaches,
world-class game reserves and outstanding diving destinations.
Self-catering St Lucia
St Lucia Safari Lodge offers superior safari accommodation at a price you can
afford. We have fifteen comfortably appointed self-catering holiday chalets;
comprising twelve four-sleeper units and three six-sleeper units. All fully
serviced, our chalets are equipped with hairdryers and telephones and have
access to national television channels (SABC 1, 2, 3 and eTV). To access DSTV,
please bring your own decoder and smartcard.
One of the great things about an African adventure holiday is getting away from
technology, such as cellphones and laptops. But, for city slickers who simply
must stay connected, St Lucia Safari Lodge offers free Wi-Fi Internet access.
If you don't feel like cooking - or having a traditional South African braai
(barbecue) at the Lodge's braai facilities - we offer breakfast and dinner on
request. Or pop into town and try one of the restaurants or cafes nearby. Don't
forget to have a pre-dinner sundowner at our bar near the pool!
St Lucia offers the daring traveller many opportunities for action and adventure
- from hikes through the bushveld and horse riding to spearfishing and diving.
Just ask at reception - they'll be happy to book your adventure events for you.
And fishermen, we've got facilities catering just for you.
All that action's dirty work - thankfully, we've an on-site laundry which offers
excellent service at a great price!
Conference Facility
St Lucia Safari Lodge offers business people a basic but very comfortable
conference facility. Situated near our lapa (thatched entertainment area) by the
pool, it provides the ideal environment in which to recharge your batteries,
identify new business opportunities and brainstorm winning business strategies.
Reasonable Prices
St Lucia Safari Lodge is priced for two seasons only - High Season (Easter and
December) and Low Season (the rest of the year). We offer holidaymakers a
wonderful Low Season Holiday Special stay for three nights and qualify for a
15% discount. Please contact us for further details. St Lucia Weather
A holiday destination must have great weather! Elephant Coast weather is
sub-tropical with average summer day temperatures of between 25 degrees and 28
degrees Celcius and 24 degrees Celsius in Winter. So, if you're looking to
escape the harsh Cape Winter, frosty Jo'burg winter days or cool European
weather, St Lucia offers wonderfully warm summertime temperatures, year-round!
St Lucia Attractions
St Lucia Estuary
The St Lucia Estuary is a body of water 85 km in length - the largest estuarine
system in Africa. The Estuary is an important breeding ground for bird species,
and birdwatchers will be delighted to discover close on one hundred species,
from the African Fish Eagle, several species of stork and pelicans to
kingfishers and the Lesser Flamingo. Get up close and personal with St Lucia
birdlife - as well as the more intimidating Nile Crocodiles and Hippos - on an
Estuary Cruise.
St Lucia Game Reserves
St Lucia is big game country, with several world-renowned game parks and nature
reserves. If it's an African safari you're after, you've come to the right
place!
Isimangaliso Wetland Park
Formerly known as the Greater St Lucia Wetland Park, the Isimangaliso Wetland
Park covers an astonishing 239 566 hectares, from St Lucia Village right up to
the Mozambique border. And that's only the land portion - the Isimangaliso
Wetland Park also comprises an additional 84 000 hectares into the ocean,
protecting marine wildlife and plants, as well as those found on land.
Mangrove, dune, swamp and coastal forests are all found within the land area of
this massive park, as well as characteristically (difficult word, can you
replace with something else) African savannah grasslands and thornybush
thickets. Under the sea, dramatic seascapes, including canyons and coral reefs
make this area a premier destination for snorkelling and diving.
Diverse flora and fauna and splendid natural beauty have made the Isimangaliso
Wetland Park a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Hhluhlwe-iMfolozi Game Reserve
Within this greater protected area known as Isimangaliso are the game reserves
of Hhluhlwe and iMfolozi, collectively referred to as Hhluhlwe-iMfolozi. It's
the oldest proclaimed park in Africa and boasts all of Africa's Big Five - lion,
leopard, buffalo, rhino and elephant. During the 1950s and 1960s, Hhuhlwe was
the focal point of Dr Ian Player's Operation Rhino - a conservation effort aimed
at bringing back rhino populations from the brink of extinction. The fight
against rhino poaching continues to this day, and is a cause to which
eco-tourists can make a valuable contribution. It remains an enormous privilege
to see these magnificent beasts alive and well in the African wild.
Cape Vidal
North-east of St Lucia is Cape Vidal - a scenic sheltered bay which offers
access to both the Indian Ocean and the eastern shore of Lake St Lucia. Cape
Vidal offers a dream beach holiday and African safari in one - game viewing,
sunbathing, swimming, angling, snorkelling and whale-watchingyou can do it all
at Cape Vidal, including treasure-hunting for the Kruger millions, rumoured to
be have been aboard the Dorothea, a ship which ran aground here in 1898 but
whose wreckage has not yet been found
Sodwana
Sodwana Bay is considered one of the top diving destinations in South Africa.
Good visibility, warm water, fourteen reefs, plenty of caves and brightly
coloured tropical fish attract thousands of divers to explore this underwater
paradise every year. For anglers and spearfishermen, there are the game fish -
like marlin and sailfish - and for natural history buffs, coelacanths have been
known to lurk in the depths. And watch out for sharks - many species can be
found here, including the huge but harmless Whale Shark.
Tour Operators
St Lucia Safari Lodge enjoys a close relationship with several international
tour operators. We're equipped to deal with large tour groups - local and
foreign visitors alike will enjoy our excellent facilities, which include a
pool, restaurant, cocktail bar, Foreign Exchange and safari tours.
