Long white beaches one minute from the doorstep
This charming fisherman's cottage-style beach house is home-from-home cosy and
artistic. The drive is just 90 minutes from Cape Town. The owners are both
well-known Stellenbosch artists. Britannia Bay is situated on the Cape West
Coast Road between Paternoster and Shelley Point in the protected St Helena Bay,
with Vredenburg and Saldanha as the other nearest towns. Closely situated to
Cape Town and most Boland and Overberg towns, it is ideal for weekend getaways
and retreats. There are three bedrooms and beds for six people.
What to bring:
Your own food and beverages. Bedlinen, bath and beach towels are provided.
Accommoation:
- The beach is one minute's walk from the doorstep with the choice of
swimming and lovely walks along two beautiful long beaches with boulders and
rock pools rich in sea life, abounding with crayfish, snoek and mussels for
the pot.
On ground level, the main bedroom has a double bed and the second bedroom
has two single beds. Both have wardrobes.
- Upstairs, the attic room has two single beds and leads out on to a
semi-covered wooden deck with loungers. Relaxing on the deck on loungers,
savour your morning coffee, tan in the sun with a book and later, sip
sundowners while watching sunset and moonrise over the sea.
- East and west-facing sea views from the house.
- On ground level, there is a fresh blue and white open-plan lounge,
dining, kitchen area for relaxed, easy entertaining, featuring a large
indoor, open fireplace in the lounge with braai facility with decor in true
West Coast / Weskus beach house style. There is a TV and DVD player. There
is an outdoor portable braai.
- Two dining tables for in- and out-door dining.
- There is one modern bathroom with bath and shower, separate toilet, with
charming hand-painted tiles. There is an outside shower open to the sky.
- The modern kitchen is fully equipped with stove, fridge, microwave,
kettle, toaster, pots, pans, crockery, and cutlery, glasses, cooking and
cleaning equipment.
- The front door opens out onto a veranda, lawn, trees, natural garden and
portable outdoor braai.
- Ample parking.
What to do:

- Whale-watching in season and dolphin-watching are brilliant from the
deck and beaches.
- This area is ideal for all ages, including children.
- The clear, calm ocean of the bay is safe for swimming, minutes from the
doorstep.
- Water sports: the Britannia Launching Bay, one minute from the house, is
great for a variety of watercraft and boats - for fishing and skiing.
- Book an ocean cruise via the owner on Calan, modern luxury cruiser.
- Marine life is unique to the St Helena Bay area, and conservation is a
priority, making natural outdoor beauty an asset to this small holiday
destination.
- Superb diving
- For action-lovers, there are quad bikes, high speed boating, Casino and
restaurants at Club Mykonos.
- Bird-watching is excellent in this area, with fine walks. Drive to
Velddrift to see the flamingos at sunset on the Berg River. The bird
sanctuary at Rocherpan, further north, has good views from hides, for a day
outing.
- In spring, this area transforms into the colourful heart of the famous
Wild Flower area.
- Crayfish is for sale in Paternoster in season.
- Restaurants – the prestigious Shelley Point Golf Estate, Paternoster,
Jacobsbaai , Elandsbaai, Langebaan, and Saldanha restaurants are recommended
for seafood. It is a good idea to make a booking (refer to
- Info File in house). There are local coffee shops. You are advised to be
patient with all local service, which is very hospitable.
- St Helena Bay Harbour - Watch the age-old late afternoon tradition - See
the fishing boats return and sell their fish, including fresh snoek in
season. Fresh seafood for sale in the harbour fish shop.
- Magnificent Golfing - Shelley Point, Saldanha and Langebaan.
- Spa, resort, gym and wellness centre at Shelley Point Golf Estate.
- Drives to charming Weskus coastal towns, such as Paternoster and Tieties
Bay (15 minutes)
- Fossil Park tours – book first.
- Several game parks to choose from, with wildlife viewing in the area.
- Khoi-San (Bushman) Museum on game reserve nearby on West Coast Road.
- Winetasting - Swartland Wine Route.
- Shopping - basics available in St Helena Shopping Centre and Pick & Pay,
Vredenburg.
- Restore the soul! Wake up to the soothing crash of the waves, the call
of the sea gulls, oyster catchers and pheasants!
