Salem Farm House is a working farm with free range chickens (hens and
broilers), organic vegetables and honey. Situated in the beautiful bushveld with
its hot summers and mild winters, great open skies (specially seen at night when
sitting around a bonfire), clean drinking water and most of all, peace and
quiet.
Activities such as walking trails, horse riding (by arrangement), a sunset drive
by tractor-and-wagon to a lookout point where game are often spotted, and in the
heat of summer, a swim in a real farm dam. But should all this seem somewhat
tame, Pilanesberg Game Reserve, Sun City and Rustenburg are close by (neither
further than a three quarter hour's drive away) as well as the Magaliesburg
Canopy Tours for the brave, which is a little farther way. Also close by, for
people who like water sports and fishing, the Koster and Swartruggens Dams might
fit your need for a day in the sun and then home to a braai in the kraal.
The entire area is specked with historical sites from the early iron age
Setswana 'kraals' as well as ruins of a 'hartbeeshuisie' and soldiers graves
from the Battle of Moedwil during the Anglo Boer War. Adding to the interest of
historical sites, the farm, Boekenhoutfontein that belonged to President Paul
Kruger, is also a worthy landmark to visit. Furthermore, Groot Marico is
renowned for its 'Mampoer' tours and Oom Schalk Louwrens stories.
And Adding to all of this, is the old farm house that make up the accommodation
of Salem Farm House. The original farmstead was built in 1898 and
although much changed and built on since then, still somehow retains it's
atmosphere of something of a bygone age. Accommodation consists of five bedrooms
with a sixth in progress as an en suite family room.
Rooms are as follows:
- Two double bedrooms, one a family room sleeping four
- Two twin bedrooms
- One en suite double bedroom
- Four bed chalet with own amenities
- Clean towels in rooms daily
The house has verandas on both the north and south side and the all the rooms
open up onto the verandas, which are also the visiting areas. Dining are in the
dining room or else outside on the 'stoep' or in the 'kraal'.
Salem Farm House is the ideal place to get away from the rush of hectic modern
life. It's a place to become quiet and get reconnected with yourself again.
Definitely recommended for tired world travelers.
Also for parents and grandparents with young children who has never been on a
farm and who has no idea where an egg comes from! Children are often invited to
'fetch' their own eggs for breakfast and help feed the horses, which they really
love.
