RUFPATCH
Self Catering House Accommodation
in Smithfield, Transgariep & Goldfields,
Free State, South Africa
Rufpatch offers comfortable, clean, well-priced self-catering accommodation
with boundless garden and open views of Smithfield's mountain. It is ideal for a
relaxed stop-over en route to your holiday destination, or for a break to
recharge your batteries.
The house has three bedrooms and three bathrooms, making it suitable for small
or large groups (sleeps nine or ten). The main bedroom has a queen sized bed
(with the option of an additional single bed); in summer a wisteria-covered
pergola over the windows helps keep the room cool. The second bedroom has a
double bed and a single bed, and has its own entrance. The exceptionally
spacious third bedroom (with an en suite bathroom) offers a double bed and two
singles and it also has its own entrance.
Bedding, including towels, is provided. There's DSTV in the sitting room,
off-street parking and a braai if you'd like to eat outdoors. A completely
walled courtyard leading from one of the sections provides a contained area for
dogs (and children).
We're close to the town's two restaurants - both highly recommended - in case
you don't feel like cooking - though our kitchen is adequately equipped (with a
microwave and two-plate gas cooker top) and leads out onto a west-facing patio
from which you can enjoy sundowners while watching the legendary Free State big
sky sunsets over the mountain.
Smithfield is an excellent stop-over venue for people travelling to the sea, and
is half-way between Gauteng and the Wild Coast. But why not time your visit so
that you can sample some of the charm of this historic little town?
One of Smithfield's boasts is Ou Grietjie, a canon used during the Boer War that
still functions and is used during village festivals. Then there's rock art in a
cave on the mountain behind the town, golf - the course was originally laid out
by British officers during the Boer War - good walking, excellent birding. And,
of course, cycling.
The house is owned by local mountain bike legend, Gus Uys, who will gladly
introduce you to the superb on- and off-road riding in the area. He has laid out
many tracks in the surrounding veld and mountains, and would be delighted to put
together a spectacular biking weekend for you. Contact him for more details of
the awesome single-tracks available here or to arrange an accompanied ride.
