OUTSIDERS RESTAURANT
Local Cuisine in Nieu-Bethesda
Eastern Cape, South Africa
Outsiders Restaurant makes itself at home in a Victorian Karoo house. The inviting corrugated iron stoep overlooks the gravel road masquerading as
Nieu Bethesda's main street, where rush hour hardly raises the dust but a donkey cart evading the gaggle of geese can create a traffic jam to
remember.
The atmosphere is casual and friendly. Rustic tables and benches, crafted from Poplar felled on a neighbouring farm, encourage guests to mingle and
chat over their freshly prepared food. Enduring friendships are made and even life partners have been found on the stoep at Outsiders.
Outsiders enjoys sharing local produce (in season), including a variety of organic vegetables and old fashioned fruit, such as pomegranate, quince,
pears and figs. We sell and serve Karoo olives, honey, sheep milk cheeses and locally brewed ales. Meat dishes feature Karoo Lamb, springbok and kudu.
Meals are served on hand-painted crockery designed by well-known potter, Clementina van der Walt.
The owner, Ian, a self-taught chef, has travelled extensively, absorbing culinary tips along the way. On clear days, spicy lamb or mouth watering
venison potjies simmer slowly over the open fire on the side of the road, as guests keep coming back for seconds. Katrin, his wife, ensures that there
is always enough home-made bread, quince jelly, chutney and other accompaniments.
Get your day off to a good start with hand-made rusks, muesli, bread and jams while Nieu-Bethesda's largest frying pan sizzles under its load of
locally cured bacon, boerewors and fresh farm eggs, onions and tomatoes. Late risers can while away the mornings on the stoep over freshly brewed
coffee and cake or scones warm from the oven.
Choose a locally brewed ale to quench your thirst over a light lunch of freshly baked bread, home-made cottage cheese, traditionally preserved meats,
chutneys and other preserves and pickles or, on wintery afternoons, a hearty soup to warm you.
Simple sundowners cool guests on sunny afternoons, with spectacular Karoo thunderstorms and sunsets providing evening entertainment.
In the evening, savour a succulent roast of Karoo lamb from the surrounding Sneeuberg Mountains, with mint sauce from the garden. After an
unforgettable Nieu-Bethesda day, let the awe inspiring Milky Way light your way home.
Frosty winter nights are warmed by hearty meals around the open fire, with gluwein and personally chosen pot still brandies and port to fortify the
soul. Silently falling snowflakes enchant and delight those lucky enough to experience their first snowfall on their walk back to their cosy Karoo bed
A few times a year, when our stocks run low, we take a trip to the wine country where we personally choose our wines and pick up ideas for our menu.
Open daily, for all meals, Outsiders is the place to be for families, single independent travellers, couples or groups of up to 60 and has lots of
creative ideas for conferences, weddings and other functions. Try them for a unique Karoo experience.
