the arrangements where necessary. The first shots of the Anglo-Boer War were
fired on the town at the Battle of Talana. The following battle sites are within
easy reach of Dundee
- Isandlwana (The defeat of the British at the hands of the Zulus)
- Rorkes Drift ( Most VC's awarded at a single battle)
- Fugitives Drift (Lt. Coghill and Melville's resting place)
- Blood River ( Between Boer and Zulu, led to the Vow of the Covenant)
- Death of the French Prince Imperial
- Hlobane Mountain
- Seige of Ladysmith
- The armoured train
- Winston Churchill's capture
Dundee also boasts an excellent historical museum, on the site of the Battle
of Talana, as do Rorkes's Drift and Ncome. The town has a picturesque 18-hole
golf course and offers squash, tennis, bowls and fishing. For the more
adventurous, the nearby Buffalo River offers white water rafting and canoeing.
There is also a 4x4 trail for the off road enthusiasts. An hour and a half away
is the Ezimvelo Ithala Game Reserve (malaria free area) which has an abundance
of bird life, as well as four of the Big Five. There are a number of restaurants
within a 3 minute drive of Penryn.
