DE OUDE PASTORIE
Self Catering House Accommodation
in Greyton, Overberg / Whale Coast,
Western Cape, South Africa
Greyton is such a quaint little historic town surrounded by the majestic
Riviersonderend mountains, rushing waterfalls, small streams, green corn fields,
yellow canola fields and even the wide Karoo on your doorstep. Summer days are
hot and balmy whilst winter offers snow capped mountain peaks. With wonderful
deli's, artist studios and cafe's, you cannot help but unwind. Sit down, relax,
read a newspaper and spoil your senses. Smell the flowers. Breathe the fresh
air. Listen to the birds. Watch the mountain from the back stoep. Sit on the
front stoep and watch the people go by. Go for a long slow walk through the oak
lined streets and appreciate the architectural history. But remember to wait
patiently for the donkey carts, cows and horses that also share the road!
Most of this country village and its Cape Vernacular architectural environment
are largely intact and surprisingly the unresponsive development that has
destroyed so many small towns of the beautiful Western Cape, has passed Greyton
by. It has a number of historical buildings such as The Post House, Greyton
Lodge, St. Andrews Church, The Moravian Church (Genadendal) and many restored
cottages.
Hiking: Greyton is surrounded by excellent hiking trails. Join a hiking party on
Mondays, Thursdays for the men, Fridays for the women or Sundays for all.
If you are very energetic there is a hiking trail from Greyton to McGregor. You
can stay over for the night before heading back to Greyton the following day.
Or hike the Genadendal hiking trail - this 28 kilometre hike will take you
through rugged mountains, cool kloofs and natural swimming-pools. "Vleistreet"
runs parallel to the river. It is paved with white cobble-stones and flows clear
fresh mountain water. There are also wonderful hiking trails and the children
will enjoy hours of refreshing swimming and fresh air. One could even go fishing
for black bass in the beautiful Riviersonderend during summer.
Definitely go to the Greyton Saturday morning market and experience the weekly
local get-together! Fresh local produce such as organic vegetables,
preservative-free cheeses, yoghurt, natural honey, freshly baked breads, cakes
and pies, fresh lemon juice and ice-cream (or lemon-curd pancakes in winter!).
Or rent bicycles (if you haven't brought your own) and explore the historical
town or mountain paths that lead into cool mountain crevasses with fern-lush
ponds.
One can also do bird-watching or visit a nearby wine farm. A trip worth noting
is the one through the streets of nearby historic Genadendal, the oldest
missionary station in the country. Visit the Moravian Church, the gift shops,
the traditional blacksmith, the wool spinners and the Moravian Restaurant for a
traditional lunch or dinner.
Greyton is also home to a number of very talented artists and galleries - and
many of them operate an open house policy. Explore the mountains on horse-back
at the Greyton Riding Club, play tennis on the old courts in the heart of
Greyton or listen to live music at Abbey Rose Tuesday evenings. That's not all:
bowls, bridge and line-dancing are also on the menu!
The less adventurous can go for a thick hot chocolate at The Post House or sit
next to the fireplace with a gluhwein and play card games! Shopping is possible
in the quaint little shops or even Somerset Mall, which is 100km away. Cape Town
is an hour and a half away and whale-watching in Hermanus is 70km away,
