Gamtoos valley: (Hankey, Patensie, Andrieskraal etc)
The Gamtoos valley is a 90 minute scenic drive from Mykonos. The valley is well
known for its fertile orange orchards and is also the gateway to the popular 'Baviaans'
(Baviaanskloof wilderness area)
Hankey:
Hankey is the oldest town in the Gamtoos valley. It was established in 1826 and
named after Rev. William Alers Hankey, an ex banker and the secretary of the
London missionary society.
Hankey is well known for the first irrigation system (via a tunnel through a
mountain) a team started in April 1843 and completed by pick,
shovel & wheelbarrow in August 1844. Information on this historic event had been
broadcasted in a TV documentary 'Pasella' last year (2007)
Sarah Baartmann memorial (hankey):
Hankey is the final rest place of Sarah Baartmann - once enslaved and
`exhibited` in France. She was re-buried on the 9th August 2002 on Vergaderingskop.
President Thabo Mbeki also attended this big and very important
burial.
'Baviaans':
To many people, the Baviaans - experience is the scenic drive, and the great
country restaurant & shop - 'Padlangs', Situated in the entrance to the Baviaans . (20 km from
Hankey, just outside Patensie)
Baviaanskloof wilderness area is situated approximately 120 km North-West of Nelson
Mandela bay on the R331 Route via Hankey. The area is rugged with spectacular
views, a 4 X 4 vehicle is recommended
