Midmar Resort and nature reserve, with its large expanse of fresh water, extensive meandering shore line, open grasslands, good road network, outdoors action and recreation facilities makes it an exciting family destination. Situated near Pietermaritzburg and Howick, Midmar forms part of the Midlands Meander tourist route.

Visitors can visit the wildlife park, which features a variety of antelope and small game species. Midmar hosts a number of sports events, and during weekends and peak periods bicycles, windsurfers, canoes and yachts can be hired and launch tours and sunset cruises can be booked by prior arrangement.

Midmar camp features 14 two-bed chalets, 13 four-bed chalets with two bedrooms, three five-bed chalets with two bedrooms and two six-bed chalets with three bedrooms. All the chalets include a lounge/dining room, fully equipped kitchen and barbecue facilities. One of the six-bed chalets caters for disabled visitors. All chalets are equipped with DSTV.

Campsites

There are three separate campgrounds within the resort, of which two have water frontage. At present two of the campgrounds have limited electrical plug point facilities. All sites are served by communal ablution blocks, with hot and cold running water.

This beautiful dam on the Umgeni River is situated next to Howick in the middle of the Midlands Meander (an association of rural businesses selling curios, art, crafts, foodstuffs and furniture and providing restaurants and accommodation.) This tranquil setting provides opportunities for a wide variety of sporting activities, including water sports, cycling,walking, game viewing, angling or just lying back at one of the many picnic sites with the tantalising smell of many barbecues wafting through the air and the green hills of KwaZulu Natal framed between water and sky. Midmar hosts the Annual Midmar Mile which is the largest open water swimming event in the world as well as a large number of provincial and National Triathlons and sailing events. The Henley Midmar Yacht club has organised races on most weekends and has excellent facilities for the sailing faternity.

A boat shop where cycles, windsurfers, canoes and yachts can be hired is open during weekends and peak periods. Launch tours and sunset cruises are available, subject to prior arrangement.

Accommodation
Thirty two fully-equipped chalets (including a six bedded chalet especially equipped for the handicapped) provide comfortable accommodation in a scenic area overlooking the dam. These chalets are all equipped with DSTV. In addition, sixteen rustic cabins, are available to the visitor. These are equipped with refrigerators and electric stoves, but have communal ablution facilities.

The gate is open 24 hours a day to residents.

The shop sells curios cool drinks and sweets.

The nearest town which has a full range of services is Howick which is 7kms away.

How to get there:
Midmar is situated just off the N3 and can be approached via the Howick North/ Tweedie off-ramp or the Howick off-ramp.

Pets are not permitted into the resort.

Facilities for people with disabilities:
There is a fully equipped 6 bed cottage that has been especially designed for people with disabilities.

Education Concessions
a. only non-profit, South African educational groups may be granted concessions;
b. concessions are only granted on entry, certain accommodation/camping and lecture facilities;
c. youth centres and similar facilities for which subsidised tariffs have been specifically created are excluded from concession rates;
d. concessions are not available during provincial school holidays;
e. the reserve management committee will be responsible for:
1. specific arrangements in regard to the activities and movements of the group whilst in the reserve;
2. reserving overnight accommodation;
3. group size and number permitted per day;
4. number of buses per day.

These will be written into the management plan for protected areas.

Accommodation / Camping & Entry
Concessions are based on half the normal adult rate for high school pupils or tertiary education students, and half the normal juvenile rate for primary or pre-primary school pupils. Teachers or lecturers accompanying educational groups are charged the same rate as the pupils/students, provided that any in excess of a ratio of 1 : 10 are charged at full rates. No Community Levy shall be paid.

Exceptions
No concessions are granted for boat rides, vehicle or launch tours, horse rides, trails, accommodation in lodges, bush camps, bush lodges, Ntshondwe and Hilltop camps. No entry fees will be charged for visits by KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) Primary and Secondary School groups, from KZN Schools to KZN Protected Areas and St Lucia Crocodile Centre provided that such visits:
1. are authorised by the head of the school;
2. are booked in advance with the officer-in-charge of the Protected Area or Crocodile Centre; and
3. do not take place over weekends or during KZN Provincial School Holidays or Public Holidays.
