Excellent birding and game viewing in the malaria free,
peaceful and tranquil, Matlabas Bushveld. This is typical sweet bushveld: game rich and covered in bushveld trees such as camelthorn, black monkeythorn, marula, red bushwillow, leadwood, knobthorn, etc. Birdlife can be spectacular, especially during the summer months when the migrants invade the bushveld. In short, this is a spectacular destination for those interested in wildlife, birding and ecology. Or for those who are just interested in chilling out far away from the city's maddening crowds.
The accommodations consist of two Mevu type safari tents, a rondavel and four rooms, accommodating seven couples. The total number of guests can be increased to a maximum of eighteen by utilising the rondavel and two of the rooms as family units. Accommodation is provided on either a self catering or fully catered basis.
Matlabas Game Lodge also has DStv and a video library (mostly wildlife). Both camps are available to only one group at a time and are fully serviced on a daily basis.
Activities offered are guided walks (during which guests are introduced to the wildlife and ecology of the bushveld); game drives in the mornings and afternoons; night drives to spot the likes of owls, antbears, brown hyenas, aardwolves, jackals, caracals, etc., etc.; tree identification outings; birding outings on foot or in open Landrovers, or by sitting at one of the many natural pans or waterholes. The adventurous are allowed to sleep out in the veld in elevated thatched blinds erected at watering points.
The owners believe in, and are committed to the concept of sustainable and responsible utilisation of our planet's natural resources. As a consequence, they aim to bring visitors close to nature; to improve their appreciation of the bushveld ecology and the natural world in general; and to provide an enriching, value-for-money, bushveld experience. Daily activities are nevertheless structured around guests interests and preferences.
