KHUMBULA LODGE
Self Catering Cottage/ House/ Bungalow Accommodation
in Underberg, Drakensberg & Surroundings,
KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa
"Khumbula" is the Zulu word for "Remember" - and you are guaranteed to
remember your visit to Khumbula Lodge in Underberg. Fond memories will remain
with you of a really wonderful stay, nestled at the foot of the World Heritage
Ukhahlamba mountains in the quaint little African village of Underberg, Southern
Drakensberg, KZN in the Kingdom of the Zulu.
This is a place where nature's unspoiled rural beauty, peace and tranquility
will restore your vigour and enthusiasm - so often lost in the hustle and bustle
of todays' urban fight for survival. Whether you have the feet up approach -
"Where is my book and glass of wine?" or the itchy feet approach - "Where are we
going to ride, hike, fish, canoe, tube or swim today" - this is the place for
you.
Four themed bedrooms (Victorian, Hollywood, Out of Africa and Autumn Colours)
will whisk you away from your routine daily existence into a wonderland of
luxury within the Khumbula Lodge interior - contrasting with the natural beauty
of the wood exterior and indigenous and rocky garden.
Khumbula Lodge has magnificent views (almost 360 degrees of them!) over dams,
farm meadows and lands under irrigation, through distant valleys and up into the
Drakensberg mountains - from way north of Sani Pass to way south of Bushmans Nek.
All this within a kilometer of Underberg and on less than 200m of good dirt
road.
Too good to be true?? Can't believe that you can be so close, yet feel so far
removed from the hustle and bustle? Well, believe it - and come and see for
yourself!!
Accommodation
Khumbula Lodge offers luxury accommodation for eight, by way of three bedrooms
and two bathrooms in the Lodge itself (6) and with a separate self contained
flatlet (2).
The master bedroom with open bathroom (but with separate enclosed toilet) is
decorated in Victorian luxury style and has its own private patio and spa bath.
The second spacious bedroom (with direct access to the main patio) is decorated
in Hollywood style, while an Out of Africa theme is used for the third bedroom.
These bedrooms have direct access to a large common bathroom, but can be turned
into en suite if so desired. The separate Autumn Colours flatlet is self
contained, with a lovely patio of its own, awarding the same stunning views as
the Lodge itself.
The very large and spacious open living area in the lodge boasts a warming log
fire and large flat screen TV, for the lounge and dining room, and also for the
open kitchen, breakfast nook - so that nobody gets left out at any time! And
that's not to mention the sophisticated "ladies" bar, where all the nostalgic
discussions about the day's events will take place and where the important
decisions will be made about the scheduled activities for tomorrow and the days
thereafter.
A large main patio leads, via a walkway, to a secondary patio with Jacuzzi, or
down to the log boma in the garden. The outside shower is perfect for an after
action cool-down on those hot summer days .The lower natural garden offers ample
scope for the kids to explore and play in the natural bush and/or the kids
playground.
A two/three parking carport will keep your vehicles safe from the elements,
which up here in the mountains can be ever-changing and at times somewhat
abrasive.
You will during your stay be "transported" into a different world - and be
transformed back into a re-vitalised human being. Ready for the daily challenges
back at home!
Khumbula Lodge is an "Eco Friendly" establishment and No Smoking and No Pets
are allowed.
Location
Khumbula Lodge is located on a ridge of land only a kilometer or so from the
Village Shopping Centre (OK Grocer) in Underberg on the Sani Pass road. Because
of the elevated position and lack of neighbours, once you drive into the Lodge,
you will feel in a world of your own, ...but in fact be within walking distance
of your Sunday news papers and other basic requirements. It is out in the open,
close to nature and with the most stunning real views imaginable, but without
long dusty and/or muddy dirt roads to get there and/or to get to and from any of
the many pubs, restaurants, sporting facilities and other activities available
in Underberg/Himeville.
Underberg is 120kms (75 minutes) from Pietermaritzburg (capital city of Kwazulu
Natal) and thus just on 200kms (two hours) from Durban and about 600kms (6
hours) from Johannesburg. The South Coast of KZN is about 3 hours away via
Kokstad and Harding. GPS Coordinates : TBA
The three major Southern Drakensberg resorts of the famous Sani Pass, Drakenberg
Gardens and Bushman Nek are all half an hour away in this World Heritage Site.
Also close by are the nature reserves of Cobham, Loteni and Coleford.
Things to Do
The area offers much, much more than first meets the eye. Just about all
activities that you could wish for are catered for in the area.
To make the most of the major attraction, which is the beautiful and natural
mountain scenery, there are numerous companies offering tours up the Sani Pass,
as well as organized hikes, walks and rides. Some of the more adventurous
pastimes, such as quad rides, paragliding, etc are also catered for. The
Marutswa Forest walk/picnic in Bulwer (30kms) is a "must" experience.
Underberg boasts the largest garden club in the country, as well as many other
cultural and sporting clubs. The Himeville Museum and The Studio art gallery are
well worth visits as is the old restored Michenau Mission water mill.
Most sports are well represented here, with the Underberg Country Club (golf and
squash) not three kms away as well as the new and exciting Sani Spoors mountain
biking trails at Duck and Dolittle Restaurant - about 2 kms out on the
Drakensberg Gardens road.
There are at least half a dozen excellent eateries within the towns of Underberg
and Himeville alone and another dozen or so within comfortable driving distance.
The Underberg Cheesery, with its own selection of unique cheeses, is also a must
for something that goes so well with that warming glass of wine.
