KEBLE ESTATE - SELF CATERING
Self Catering Chalet/ Townhouse
in Clocolan, Northern & Eastern Free State,
Free State, South Africa
For the first time ever we have decided to open our historic home to the
public.
We offer five double bedrooms - one of which has a bathroom en suite - in our
original 1872 sandstone manor house, located- at Clocolan in a scenic and still
undiscovered part of the eastern Free State.
We offer affordable, family breaks and, because we are just beginning, exclusive
use of the 310ha estate, for up to 10 people on a self-catering basis or fully
catered.
Keble offers you a wonderful chance to get away in a peaceful retreat with
magnificent gardens and superb mountain walks. We have a swimming pool, a
clay-pigeon shooting range and old clay tennis court; we also offer Boule and
Croquet and a full-sized Billiard table.
Our small, 111-year-old Chapel, St Michael and All Angels, offers an intimate
venue for weddings.
We are close to Lesotho and you can use Keble as a base to tour, or to go skiing
in the Maloti's.
Three golf-courses lie within easy reach - the 9-hole Clocolan course, reputedly
South Africa's 3rd best 9-hole course, where a round with a caddy costs less
than R120; and the similarly priced, 18-hole Ladybrand courses,
which are just 40kms away.
Mostly, enjoy the peace and beauty of the magnificent estate which was built by
the Reverend Algernon Harcourt-Vernon, who became the Anglican Canon of
Bloemfontein, and named the estate after Keble College at Oxford University.
Keble has a colourful history and horses from the estate were transported to
nearby Modderpoort for the use of the Royal Family during their 1948 South
African visit.
Located 13km from Clocolan on the Excelsior road, Keble is close to Lesotho and
midway between Ficksburg and Ladybrand. It is easily reached on tar roads from
Johannesburg (3 ½ hours) and Durban. (4 hours)
The homestead is reached via a kilometre-long avenue of old oak trees -
reputedly from acorns collected in the Sherwood Forest by Harcourt-Vernon. It is
set in a manicured English garden and surrounded by an amphitheatre of sandstone
mountains.
The house has magnificent original woodwork and panelling and comprises a large,
"music room", a separate dining room, a lounge, farmhouse kitchen, bathroom with
toilet, a separate toilet and two large Victorian bedrooms. A feature staircase
leads upstairs to the, private, owners’ bedrooms.
The separate Coach House has two upstairs guest bedrooms, sharing a bathroom;
and a third cottage in the garden, with its en-suite bathroom, overlooks an old
clay tennis court.
Accommodation comprises:
- two Victorian bedrooms in the main house, which share a bathroom;
- two upstairs bedrooms in the Coach House, which share a bathroom;
- and the en-suite garden suite.
Keble is a working farm, producing wheat and maize. Livestock includes a number
of horses and small herds of sheep and cattle.
