Zonnebloem is a historic inner-city neighbourhood immediately east of Cape Town’s city centre, occupying part of the area once associated with District Six. Today, it is a fascinating mixture of residential streets, educational institutions and heritage sites, with the slopes of Devil’s Peak rising dramatically behind it.
The name Zonnebloem comes from the Dutch/Afrikaans word for ‘sunflower’. It was adopted from the historic Zonnebloem farm, which once occupied much of this part of the city. The farm dates back to the 18th century and later gave its name to the surrounding area.
Zonnebloem’s history is closely intertwined with District Six, one of Cape Town’s most culturally significant areas. During the apartheid era, District Six was declared a white area under the Group Areas Act, resulting in the forced removal of thousands of residents and the destruction of much of the original neighbourhood. Today, the legacy of those removals remains an important part of the area's identity.
One of the most significant places to visit is the District Six Museum, housed in a former Methodist church. Its exhibitions tell the stories of former residents and preserve memories of the vibrant community that once occupied the district.
The area is also home to the Cape Peninsula University of Technology and lies close to the Castle of Good Hope, one of Cape Town’s oldest surviving colonial buildings. The Company’s Garden and Iziko museums are within easy walking distance or a short drive.
Zonnebloem lies in the Cape Town region, just beyond the central business district and beneath Devil’s Peak. Its location makes it particularly convenient for exploring the city's historic core, while the surrounding streets reveal layers of Cape Town’s colonial, apartheid and modern history.
For travellers, Zonnebloem offers far more than a typical urban neighbourhood. Its heritage, museums and proximity to District Six make it an important destination for understanding Cape Town’s past, while its position beneath the mountain provides a striking setting for exploring the city.
