De Doorns

De Doorns is a town in Cape Winelands District Municipality in the Western Cape. The town lies in the beautiful Hex River Valley, only 32 km north-east of Worcester and 40 km south-west of Touwsrivier. De Doorns is in the centre of an export grape growing region and is surrounded by over 200 wine farms.

De Doorns takes its name from the farm De Doorns boven aan de Hex Rivier , which means the thorns on the upper Hex River. The farm was bought by the government of Cape Prime Minister John Molteno in 1875, to build a railway station for the rapidly expanding Cape Government Railways. The line was immediately built through De Doorns, connecting it to Cape Town on the coast and reaching Montagu Road(later Touws River) in 1877, on its way to Kimberley. Around the station, the hamlet of De Doorns would later develop.

The area is also home to the De Doorns Cellar, the cellar with the longest harvest season in the world and the biggest pre-cooler in the southern hemisphere, Hexkoel. During autumn, the valley is an explosion of colour as the leaves change hues from a uniform green to yellows, burgundy, russet and mocha, transforming the valley floor into a patchwork of rich earthy tones and a photgrapher's delight! In winter, the Matroosberg is snow capped. Owing to its beauty and mountainous terrain, a great selection of outdoor activities are offered along the Hexcape Grape Route

The Hex Valley Golf Club offers a challenging 9-hole course, with the Hex Valley Bowling Club situated right next to it at the entrance to De Doorns.

The Two Tunnel MTB Trail is a great option for the experienced mountain biker looking for a more challenging route with stunning scenery. Agama Atra Bouldering Trail is a graded and marked rock climbing route that leads to the Groothoek hut.

Hexpas Ecotrek offeres Historical Homestead Tours to some of the oldest homesteads in the Hex River Valley. The history and architecture of each house is shared. A trip on the Hexpas Express will take you back in time while enjoying the sumptuous picnic treats of Kikku D’uva Coffee Shop. Guided tours along the Ochre Trail gives visitors access to the San rock art heritage on the slopes of the Hex River Mountain range.

And finaly for the wine lovers, Wine Tasting and Cellar Tours include visits to De Doorns Cellar, Hex River Crossing Private Cellar, La Rochelle Goats Milk Cheese Factory. The area is a good place to visit as an alternative to more well-known wine and tourism routes.
