The South African National Gallery in Cape Town was established in 1871, from a collection of 45 paintings
bequeathed by Thomas Butterworth Bayley. Since that time many more patrons have contributed to the gallery's collection which now contains thousands of paintings and sculptures from around the world.
The gallery has a particularly fine collection of British, Dutch and French paintings, especially from the early 20th century, such as work from the New English Art Club and the Bloomsbury Group.
In recent years the gallery has focused on developing it's collection of indigenous artwork, especially sculptures and beadwork. Ongoing efforts are also being made to repatriate African works of art that have left the country.
The gallery's vast collection cannot be exhibited at one time, so one can expect to find new works on
display on a regular basis.
