The Bloemhof dam is one of the most popular freshwater fishing destinations in South Africa. Every year various fishing competitions are held including the Tri-Nations and the Bloemhof Bonanza.
The massive 5 km wide dam structure itself is well worth exploring. Besides fishing, the dam is also very popular with various types of water sports including jet skiing, water-skiing, and parasailing.
A 14,000 ha nature reserve surrounds the dam, which is home to numerous game including eland, wildebeest, gemsbok, and springbok, as well as hundreds of different bird species.
