Mkuzi's 40,000 ha of pristine coastal plains are bordered to the north by the Mkuze river and to the south by the Msunduzi river. This region is now being incorporated as part of the Greater St. Lucia Wetlands Park.

The landscape varies from woodlands and riverine forest and swamps to open acacia savannah. The park is well-known for it's riverine fig forests along banks of the Mkhuze River.

The Nhlonhlela and Nsumo pans are home to over 400 bird species including African broadbill, bee-eaters, wild geese, and white-backed vultures.

The traditional crafts and lifestyle of the KwaJobe community that live in this region can experienced at the local Zulu cultural village.
