Table Mountain National Park

Undoubtedly Cape Town's most iconic landmark, a trip to the top of Table Mountain is a must on any South African tourist's itinerary. The Table Mountain National Park has been declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, primarily to preserve it's unique floral kingdom - the Cape fynbos.

Most visitors will ascend the mountain by way of cable car. But for those who are up to the challenge, there are several trails that also lead to the top, the most common route being Platteklip Gorge Hiking Trail. Several groups offer abseiling, for those seeking a quicker and more thrilling descent.

Form the summit, the view across the city is nothing less than spectacular. For such a popular tourist spot, the mountain top is surprisingly unspoilt. There are very few facilities other than a small restaurant, and of course the upper cable way station.
