Formerly known as the Kalahari Gemsbok National Park, this region has merged with the the Botswana Gemsbok National Park to form a vast wilderness area of semi-desert encompassing 3.8 million hectares of red Kalahari sand dunes.
The dry river beds of the Nossob and Auob Rivers double as the park's main roads, which meet at Twee Rivieren camp and head northward to the Mata Mata camp along the Auob and the Nossab camp along the Botswana border.
Raptors and other birds of prey pierce the stark blue skies, scouring the landscape for any movement of snakes, ground squirrels or suricates, as well as various gerbils, mice and other rodents that dwell amongst the scant vegetation of the riverbeds.
These riverbeds also form the focal point for the grazing of a large number of herbivores, most notable being the blue wildebeest, springbok, eland and red hartebeest. In pursuit of these magnificent creatures are various large cats including cheetah, leopard, and the black-maned lion, followed up by the brown and spotted hyenas.
