Energizer Night Race
Having moved to Johannesburg in 2010 from its origins at Hilton College, KwaZulu Natal, the event has found a new home at the country estate of Monaghan Farm, close to Lanseria airport. This beautiful venue offers an abundance of trails and natural beauty which lends itself perfectly to an event such as the Energizer Night Race. 2012 will see the race enter its eighth season and true to change, it continues to evolve as it establishes itself in the Gauteng market. The 2011 event showed tremendous growth with over twelve hundred athletes participating across the four events, making it the biggest of its kind in South Africa.
The event is broken down into four different races, the Run Relay, the Mountain Bike Relay, the 5km Fun Run and the 5km Fun Walk.
The Run Relay
Running teams of four athletes use an Energizer headlight provided as their relay baton as they each take on a 5km lap of the trail run route. The headlight will light their way and keep them on the path as reflectors placed on the trees light their way through the night. With a water table on route at the half way point and the rest of your team waiting to cheer you on back at the finish line you will race like a scared rabbit through the night as the darkness surrounds you in the canopy of trees. Marshals and safety are provided on the course.
The Mountain Bike Relay
MTB teams of two athletes will each do one lap of the 10km course in a relay sequence followed by a final lap together (ie: 3 laps in total). The course will entail some short fast climbs, single track and farm roads. With the dew at night or possible rain, the roads could get slippery so make sure that you have the right tires on your bike. The course is designed to be fun and attainable for all levels of skill.
The 5km Fun Run
The 5km Individual Trail Fun Run is for those who are not wanting to run as a relay. Get your friends together and enjoy each others company while taking on the 5km trail run at your leisure.
The 5km Fun Walk
Not into running or relays? Bring your walking shoes and take on a lap of the 5km trail at your leisure and in the company of your friends. Nothing like a stroll in the dark with only an Energizer headlight to guide you.
Entertainment at the 2011 event was dazzling and included a spectacular laser light show by Laser X, The Graeme Watkins Project and Blake Roberts bands, live dancing from Dangerous Curves and Dreams of Fire fire dancers. With the growth that has taken place in the event over the past years, and incredible entertainment line ups you need to make sure you get to Monaghan Farm on the 6th October 2012 and joint in on the experience of the Energizer Night Race.
