Cape Town Marathon
The Cape Town Marathon is one of the most beautiful settings for a city marathon that you could ever wish to find and it showcases Table Mountain, the sea and most of the major tourist attractions in Cape Town. The route is fast and flat and caters for beginners who want to finish their first marathon (with an the eight hour cut-off it allows first timers and walkers the chance to complete the distance with no pressure) or the elite runners who want to chase down fast race times. The marathon starts at 06:30 in Adderley Street, Cape Towns city centre, and takes runners out to Rondebosch before looping back to the City via the Victoria and Alfred Waterfront, Sea Point, the Green Point Common and finishes at Biodiversity Garden, on south side of Urban Park.
The Cape Town Marathon 42 kilometre is a qualifier for the 2012 Comrades and the Old Mutual Two Oceans Marathon. The event also includes the following, the Cape Town 10 kilometre, the Cape Town 4.2 kilometre Mini Marathon, the Cape Town 5 x 4.2 kilometre Relay and the Cape Town 5 kilometre Fun Run.
Cape Town 4.2 kilometre Mini Marathon is also held in conjunction with the Cape Town Marathon but starts at 07:45 and will mostly be run on the last 4.2 kilometre of the marathon route. This Mini-Marathon is aimed at athletes between the ages of 14-19 years with two separate age categories in the race, namely Junior (18-19) and Youth (14-17). This event is not an open event and requires participants to qualify via several different methods, including their positions in the mini marathon league, at cross country races and various qualifying races.
The Cape Town 5 x 4.2 kilometre Relay is generally held the day before the 42 kilometre marathon and is aimed at clubs, companies and schools. The teams consist of 5 runners, of which each runner will complete the 4.2 kilometre loop. The loops take in the Cape Town Stadium, the pedestrian and cycle paths and the Park Amphitheatre and start and finish in the Green Point Common at 14:30.
The Cape Town 5 kilometre Fun Run also takes place the day before the main 42 kilometre event and starts at 16:30 in the Green Point Common.
The Cape Town Marathon usually takes place during September each year with the 2011 event taking place on the 24 and 25 September.
