Cape Town International Ballet Competition
Top dancers from around South Africa and the world, whether professional or non-professional are invited each year to take part in what is the only international ballet competition on the African continent. And what better place to host this event than one of the most beautiful cities in the world, South Africas mother city, Cape Town.
Every year these talented dancers compete for gold, silver and bronze medals as well as substantial monetary prizes which are on a par with other major international ballet competitions. The Artscape Opera House comes alive with music and dancing as judges from around the world settle to choose the best of the best. The judges in themselves are often the best in their own arenas and 2012s confirmed judges include Kevin O’Hare (Director Designate, The Royal Ballet), Hae Shik Kim (South Korea), Leticia Müller (Former ballerina, PACT Ballet and Birmingham Royal Ballet), Lynn Wallis (Artistic Director, Royal Academy of Dance), Mario Galizzi (Argentina), Ramona de Saa (Director, National Ballet School of Cuba) and Septime Webre (Artistic Director, The Washington Ballet). In order to enhance the standard of the competition and to furthermore attract a higher calibre of competing dancers, the Cape Town International Ballet Competition co-operates with other international competitions such as Youth America Grand Prix, the South Korea International Dance Competition, the Royal Academy of Dance’s Genee International Ballet Competition and several ballet institutions in Cuba.
Cape Town International Ballet Competition CEO Dirk Badenhorst has announced that the 2012 competition will take place at the Artscape Theatre Centre
in Cape Town, South Africa, from 27 February to 4 March 2012.
The Cape Town International Ballet Competition is a highly recognised event on the dancing callender and is fully supported by The City of Cape Town.
