Theatre on the Square
Set on the upmarket Nelson Mandela Square (formerly Sandton Square), the theatre certainly lives up to its fine reputation. Daphne Kuhn (Owner/Producer) will be making sure that you have a full choice of fine theatre throughout the year. Over the past 9 or so years over 100 productions - including plays, musicals, lunch hour and childrens theatre have been presented at the theatre. The theatre has received many awards and nominations for theatrical excellence which is par for the course for Daphne Kuhn who hols a Masters Degree in Drama. The Theatre which seats 200 people usually stages performances from Tuesdays to Fridays, at 20:15, and on Saturdays at 17:30 and 20:30pm. Every now and then there are a few low-price previews prior to the official opening of each new show. Some of the shows lined up for 2011 include, London Road by Nick Spagnoletti, Tuesdays With Morrie, Casual Sax, a 5 member cast production of The Pirates of Penzance and The Prize of Peace, written by Les Morrison. In addition to the regular theatrical performances, The Theatre on the Square also hosts numerous corporate events, concerts, industrial theatre as well as a regular youth theatre training programme in the performing arts. Fridays will also see the theatre resume its weekly classical music lunch hour programme. For convenience a bar and coffee bar is located in the theatres lower foyer where you can order your drink before the show so that it will be waiting for you at interval!
