Peter's Gate Herbal Centre

Peter's Gate Herbal Centre was established in the mid 1990's by Geoff and Karen Makin and provides visitors with a unique South African herbal experience. Peter's Gate is home to the largest variety of herb plants in KwaZulu Natal. It is located in the magnificent Caversham Valley near Balgowan, in the KwaZulu Natal Midlands.

The Makin family hold a strong passion for their natural surroundings and organic lifestyle, and are sensitive to the ecological needs of the world around them. It is with this passion that they grow and manufacture their wide range of herb plants and products which are produced on site at Peter's Gate.

The name Peter's Gate, is derived from St. Peter - keeper of the gates to heaven, and the heaven is the pristine Caversham Valley, of which magnificent views can be obtained from the centre. Aside from the awe inspiring scenery of the region, Peter's Gate also offers visitors the opportunity to marvel at more than 400 herbs set in both formal and informal gardens. Many of these plants are for sale to the public, along with a range of unusual herbal products, interesting and informative books and magazines, herbal gifts, medicinal teas, creams, tinctures, and herbal cosmetics, and natural soaps. The herbal centre also has a small coffee shop with splendid view across the valley.

Peter's Gate Herbal Centre also features a herb school which offers visitors monthly herb courses, with hopes of encouraging visitors to adopt a more environmentally friendly approach to gardening and to their health. These courses include soap making, and a number of other interesting herb related topics.

Peter's Gate also features a Labyrinth, which represents a journey to our own centre and back again out into the world. Labyrinths have long been used as meditation and prayer tools, allowing those who walk its path to reflect and achieve a higher level of inner peace.
