PR Owen Dinosaur Park

The PR Owen Dinosaur park, located near Sudwala Caves in Mpumalanga is the largest and most scientifically accurate park of its kind in the world. The park is set in a lush, sub-tropical forest garden where beautiful cabbage trees, cycads, monkeys and birds flourish in abundance. The park is dedicated to the late PR Owen who decided to open the facility after a visit to American Museum of Natural History. A display of pre-historic animals were installed at the small open air museum near the Sudwala Caves soon after.

The enourmous and imposing figures housed at the park, were constructed by Ian Theron Van Zyl, a world renowned animal sculptor, using a combination of materials which included steel, asbestos and cement. Before these creatures were "reborn" however, much research was conducted using available data on previously discovered fossils, with the expert assistance of Dr. Andre Keyser, chief of the Palaeotological Division of the Department of Mines at the time. A number of the large and terrifyingly realistic dinosaurs are displayed in natural surroundings.

The popular destination offers children an exciting and educational glimpse into the world of Dinosaurs and other pre-historic animals with over a hundred various varieties of pre-historic monsters on display. Featured creatures range from the Ichthyostega, which was a small creeping reptile that first emerged on land from the surrounding seas between two and three hundred million years ago, to the more recent and vicious Tyrannosaurus Rex, the king of the dinosaurs. Recently six magnificently crafted sculptures were added to the visual depiction of the story of the horse family, Equus. The display draws the story to an end with an exhibit featuring the now extinct Cape Quagga being brought down by the black-maned Cape Lion, also extinct.
