The International Library of African Music, established in 1954, is based on
the campus of Rhodes University in Grahamstown, and serves as a research,
publishing and teaching facility of African music. Although not strictly a
museum, the library located in Prince Alfred Street, houses an impressive
collection of more than two hundred various traditional African musical
instruments, most of which are in excellent condition, and can still be played.
These instruments are regularly used for teaching purposes. The International
Library of African Music also houses a wide variety of recordings of traditional
African music, as well as various books and catalogues.
The International Library of African Music is open to the public by
appointment only, Monday to Friday between 08h30 and 17h00. For more information
