Charles Vix's Cottage

Charles Vix was a surgeon who accompanied the British German Legion to the Eastern Cape in 1856. Vis was given a grant of land in the East London area, and a small cottage was constructed on it in the 1850's. It is said that Vix's surgery was housed in the small cottage.

When the legionaires left the country, Vix decided to stay in East London, and must have died in the 1860's or 1870's as his widow, Martha , is recorded as living at Park avenue in 1879.

Vix's cottage is the only remaining German settler house in East London which has not been altered or modernized. This structure stands in the grounds of Gately House, and consists of a small, two room square cottage with very thick walls and small sash windows. The one room is furnished as John Gately’s office and the other is used as a store.
